8:25pm Eastern Time on November 4th 2008. I sit in my living room relaxing with my thoughts feeling something brewing in the air. In my head I was thinking all of the things I had never witnessed in my 27 years of existence, and on top of the list were equality in the world along with seeing an African-American President.
At 10:30pm Eastern time, I glanced at the numbers. Obama 207, McCain 135; the reality of the situation slowly began to resonate within. By 11pm Eastern Time, CNN concludes by stating, “ at 11pm CNN can presume that Barack Obama will be the 44th President of the United States of America.
I stood proud and applauded of course! Sending out very few text messages and answering very few phone calls not because of any ill reason, but because as much as a triumph as the obvious historical reasons in response to a black man’s plight (no need for me to go there); I see things with my
“Reality Goggles” on.
A CNN correspondent made such a profound statement that is the basis of my entry. Upon assuming office in 2000, current President Bush’s had a stronger economy and a surplus at his hands. I repeat a surplus and a strong economy. The CNN correspondents shared a laugh, not to poke fun at the current situation of our country, but at the irony in the differences in the starting situations of President Bush in 2000 and President Elect Obama 2009.
Fair? Maybe not, but it is our current reality.
I began to think of how in this new ideology of the world, patience has become a thing of the past. We have adopted a win now cry later attitude. Which then led me to think how in the unfair world and unfair America I have grown up in; not to mention being a black man has always put me in at a disadvantage.
I consider this an extreme obstacle for the President Elect when the vast majority of my minority friends, family and colleagues have gone through similar situations. Pull the affirmative action card all you want, but it is the blatant truth.
Times have changed, Traditions have bent and America needed this for so many reasons. But, I end with this. For all of the reasons facts and opinions that I stated above, I beg the non-believers of the world, whether you are an overtly racist or undercover racist (there is a whole lot of you), avert to change. Everyone deserves a FAIR chance. Barack Obama is not God, and as I have been honored to hear him say, he will make mistakes, and NO he isn’t the leader or Savior for the Black Race (I can get into a whole other debate about that). He is the new Leader for all, and it is a huge achievement for mankind that he is an African American, a Mixed Race Man in America who defied odds and now deserves a fair shot to create change.
Think about it as I use this sports analogy. Barack Obama is the head coach taking over a team who has had the losing record for the last 8 years, not the winning record. It will not happen over night but it will happen. Give us Free, Give us a Black President and now Give us a Fair Chance.
Congrats goes out to the Obama’s on this Victory for AMERICA. | 5ptMAG
