2009 had been a year of mixed feelings for most of us. The bubble burst on the world wide economy early last year to usher in the worst depression since the original 'Great' depression. A lot of us lost our heroes, whether physically, in the case of Michael Jackson or hypothetically in the case of Tiger Woods. But, there were miracles as well. There was the 'Miracle' on the Hudson where, in an act of wit and heroism, Captain Sully Sullenberger made a ridiculous landing on the Hudson around two bridges and several towering buildings. And, in what is probably the most important event in my lifetime, a black man was inaugurated as President of the United States .

It was a revitalization of the American Dream. Perhaps the 'Great Western Experiment' wasn't going so badly after all? Amidst all this hope though, again, the world was crumbling around us. The banks who a few years ago seemed invincible were failing before us right before our eyes. For people in their 20's, people like me, it all seemed farcical like one big joke. Millions of people lost their jobs and just recently I read the unemployment in Detroit has hit 50 percent. Pillars of the American economy were lost forever i.e Bear Stearns. After getting punched in the face so many times you start to question the puncher. Do they even exist? Is there something else going on here? But, other than pseudo - existential questions about our deservedness for work 2009 has been about innovation. Its been about dreams. You could argue that every year is about dreams right? But 2009 was the year of dreams above all else. It was a year where every decision seemed potentially perilous. Truly as Dr. Seuss said “Do you dare to go out? Do you dare to stay in? How much can you lose? How much can you win?” But through all that we innovated. We created.

We made magazines and blogs and videos, music, movies and animations and we followed our dreams though the path was rocky and cruel because for us there is nothing else. “Tread softly” said Mr. Yates and that doesn't apply any more than now. In 2010 we will seek to strengthen our dreams. We will take it even further than before. “I just wanna be successful” Drake auto-tuned, #weoffthat, earlier this year and he wasn't lyin! I'm happy to be alive during this time. There are so many people doing fantastic things. I just wanna be apart of it. 5Pointmagazine just wants to be apart of it. The world of stagnation is pushing against us and we at 5point are pushing back. I think its gonna be a great year.
